Lamar Jackson is heading to the operating table for his right thumb. The Baltimore Ravens will place the two-time MVP on injured reserve following Sunday's 36-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Head coach Jesse Minter confirmed the status after the game, marking another injury blow to the offense.
The injury occurred on the first offensive play of the contest. Buffalo linebacker Greg Rousseau struck Jackson's throwing hand while attempting to deflect a pass. Jackson inspected his thumb on the field before moving to the sideline for treatment. He later walked into the tunnel with his right hand wrapped and supported by a trainer. A brace was visible when he returned to the sideline during the third quarter.
This injury follows a three-game absence for Jackson due to a high ankle sprain. His return was intended to stabilize an offense that struggled during his time away. The quarterback depth chart took another hit in the second quarter when backup Tyler Huntley suffered a right toe injury. Huntley completed two of four passes for zero yards before being ruled out in the third quarter.
With both starters unavailable, the Ravens turned to undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano. The UConn product made his regular-season debut and completed 10 of 21 passes for 91 yards. He also threw one interception during the game.
Jackson's placement on injured reserve requires him to miss at least four games. The Ravens now face an extended stretch without their franchise quarterback as they work to recover from the loss and manage their roster.
