First Lady's Office Sets Six-Day Pause in Oleshky Fighting
The truce begins October 29 to allow aid and evacuation, with Mrs. Trump claiming a sole mediating role.

The office of First Lady Melania Trump announced on Friday that a six-day ceasefire will halt military action in Oleshky, a Russian-occupied city in southern Ukraine. The pause is scheduled to begin on Thursday, October 29. This specific timeline allows for the entry of humanitarian supplies and the preparation of a civilian evacuation route.
The announcement credited Mrs. Trump with brokering the deal, bypassing the President and other senior officials. Her office stated that she served as the "Exclusive Intermediary," working directly with Russian and Ukrainian leadership to define the terms. The statement said she initiated talks and aligned both parties on objectives, technical procedures, and timing.
Mrs. Trump described the city as a "front-line war city on the brink of disaster." She noted that the remaining population consists mostly of elderly residents who require medical attention, medicine, food, and clean water. According to her office, residents face limited electricity, mined roads, and regular attacks. She claimed that without her intervention, bringing in aid and evacuating the elderly would have been impossible.
Under the agreement, non-military civilian leaders from both nations will visit residents to assess their needs. Those wishing to leave will receive coordinated transportation to a destination of their choice. Mrs. Trump said some residents may choose to go to Russia, while others may go to Ukraine. She also arranged for an American media organization to document the efforts of both teams, with Newsmax confirming its participation.
Ukrainian officials indicated that a tentative agreement has been reached for the occupied territory, though neither country has issued a public comment on the announcement. White House communications director Steven Cheung called the development "amazing news" on X, describing it as a major step toward peace.
The announcement follows a call between Pope Leo and Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which the Pope expressed concern over the humanitarian situation. Mrs. Trump has also worked to reunite 34 children with their families after they were forcibly removed by Russia.
The ceasefire comes as President Trump’s broader efforts to end the war have stalled. In recent days, he expressed frustration with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, suggesting Ukraine should have a new leader. Mr. Trump told reporters earlier this week that Russia had been "fine on Ukraine" and that they "haven't been doing much."
