Five days after being struck by a vehicle in Wangaratta, Australian MP Helen Haines has been moved out of critical care. The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne announced on Saturday morning that her condition has improved to serious but stable. This marks the first change in her status since she was airlifted to the hospital following the incident on Monday.

Haines, 65, serves as an independent member of parliament. Authorities state she was deliberately hit outside her electorate office in north-east Victoria. Medical staff amputated both of her legs as a result of the injuries sustained in the attack. Her husband, Phil Haines, described the event as a horrendous incident on Wednesday. He noted that while her physical injuries are severe, her heart and mind remain in good shape.

Brendan Nugent, 43, was arrested shortly after the collision. Police allege he drove a Toyota LandCruiser into the MP. He has appeared in court facing three charges: dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. Prosecutors indicated that further charges, including attempted murder, could be added. Nugent's lawyer told the court his client has mental health concerns but provided no further details.

Victoria Police said their investigation is ongoing with support from the Australian Federal Police. A motive has not yet been established. Investigators are examining whether drug use or medication played a role in the incident. Nugent's family stated they were long-time friends of Haines.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese commented to ABC television that Australia has seen a rise in temperature and too much shouting. Haines entered parliament in 2019 after working as a nurse and midwife. She is known for advocating stronger climate action.
