Andre Thomas, the chief executive of a local violence prevention organization, was killed by gunfire at his office in Chicago Heights on Saturday night. Police discovered the 57-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds in the 400 block of West 14th Street around 9:25 p.m. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where medical staff pronounced him dead. The Cook County medical examiner ruled the death a homicide.
Thomas served as both CEO and Executive Director of Integrity & Fidelity. The group operates in sections of Chicago and the south suburbs that experience high rates of gun violence. Ald. David Moore of the 17th Ward confirmed the details in a Facebook post. He described the event as an unimaginable loss for Thomas's family, friends, and the many communities he served. Moore noted that the act of violence was senseless.
The victim resided in Matteson. His relatives declined to speak to reporters on Monday following the shooting. Thomas had previously discussed strategies for reducing gun violence in interviews. He argued that investing money directly in impacted communities was the key to lowering incident rates. He highlighted the role of employment in stability.
In one such interview, Thomas stated that no one holding a standard 40-hour job is typically the one going out to shoot and kill. His comments reflected a focus on economic factors in community safety. The shooting occurred in the office space where his organization conducted its work. Local law enforcement agencies are handling the investigation into the fatal incident.
