Dale Brown, the longtime head coach of the LSU men’s basketball team, died on Friday, October 23, in Baton Rouge. He was 90 years old.

Brown’s death occurred just 48 hours after the university announced his selection for the 2027 John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award. The honor recognizes his lasting impact on the sport. He had served as the Tigers’ head coach for 25 seasons, spanning the years 1972 through 1997.

During his tenure, Brown recorded 448 wins, a school record for head coaches. His teams captured four Southeastern Conference regular-season titles and qualified for the NCAA Tournament on 13 occasions. The program reached the Final Four in 1981 and again in 1986. Notable players in his system included Shaquille O’Neal, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, and Rudy Macklin.

The family released a statement describing Brown as a dedicated humanitarian. They noted that he "always led with the heart" and was "a great humanitarian before anything else." Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry posted on X that Brown "put LSU Basketball on the map." Sports journalist Marc J. Spears also used the platform to call Brown "an extraordinary human."

Brown arrived in Baton Rouge in 1972 to rebuild the program. He traveled across Louisiana to recruit fans and secure support. His efforts yielded the school’s first SEC regular-season title since 1954 in 1979. Two years later, his squad advanced to the 1981 Final Four. Brown received the Associated Press National Coach of the Year award in 1981 and was named SEC Coach of the Year four times.

In 2022, the university renamed the floor inside the Pete Maravich Assembly Center the Dale Brown Court. In 2023, it became Dale Brown/Sue Gunter Court to honor two former coaches. Brown was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame and the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. He was born on October 31, 1935, in Minot, North Dakota, and died eight days before his 91st birthday.
