A 36-year-old British woman died in North Bimini on Tuesday after a strong current carried her away while she tried to save her two sons. The Royal Bahamas Police Force has opened an investigation into the incident, which occurred during a snorkeling outing near the southern point of the island.
According to police, the woman was in the water with her husband and their two boys when the current swept both children away. While attempting to reach them, the woman was also caught by the current. The boys were later pulled from the water unharmed.
Officers at the Alice Town police station received a call shortly after 10 a.m. reporting that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini ferry dock. When police arrived, the woman had already been transported to the local clinic for medical treatment. A doctor at the clinic pronounced her dead despite resuscitation efforts.
Police stated that the woman was rescued from the water and brought to the ferry dock, where bystanders administered CPR. The force confirmed in a statement that foul play is not suspected at this time. An autopsy will be performed to determine the specific cause of death.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it is aware of the case. A spokesperson said, "Our thoughts are with the family of a British woman who has died in the Bahamas." The office said officials are in contact with local authorities and providing support to the family.
Bimini is a small island group located between Andros and Miami. It serves as the closest point in the Bahamas to the US mainland. The islands are known for their history as the former home of Ernest Hemingway and for hosting a major shark research center.
