A 23-year-old resident of Givatayim was taken into custody on Saturday night following an incident at a political rally in Tel Aviv. The arrest stems from allegations that the man physically shoved a member of the security detail assigned to protect former prime minister Naftali Bennett. The event was a public gathering where Bennett spoke about the need for a commission of inquiry into the events surrounding the October 7 massacre.

According to initial reports, the suspect was intoxicated when he attempted to close the distance between himself and the former prime minister. Witnesses described the man shouting the slogan 'Only Bibi,' a phrase used to express support for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He tried to push through the cordon established by the guards, ignoring repeated instructions to stay back. Although one officer pushed him back to maintain the perimeter, the man refused to retreat.

The situation escalated when the suspect confronted the guard who had pushed him. He shoved the officer in return, leading to a brief physical struggle. The security team quickly subdued the man and held him at the scene until additional help arrived. Police officers came to the park, took the suspect into custody, and transported him to a local station for further questioning.

Preliminary checks indicate that the man does not have a prior criminal record. Investigators are currently reviewing the details of the encounter to determine if the suspect was acting alone or if other factors contributed to the disturbance. The alcohol impairment noted by initial observers remains a key point of inquiry as the police gather statements from the guards and other staff members present.

The incident occurred just days before the 2026 Knesset elections are scheduled to take place. Military personnel have already begun casting their ballots at designated polling stations earlier in the week. This timing places the event in a sensitive period for political leaders who are actively campaigning or participating in public events. Bennett, who served as prime minister from June 2021 to June 2022, remains a prominent figure in the B'Yachad party.

The rally itself was focused on accountability regarding the security failures that preceded the October 7 attacks. Bennett used the platform to demand the creation of an independent commission to investigate those failures. While the altercation drew attention, it did not appear to derail the main agenda of the gathering. The security detail successfully contained the disruption, allowing the former prime minister to complete his address to the crowd.

Police have not yet released detailed charges against the suspect. The investigation is ongoing, with officers working to reconstruct the sequence of events from the moment the man entered the park until his arrest. There are no reports of serious injuries to the guard involved in the shoving incident. The suspect is expected to remain in police custody while investigators complete their preliminary assessment of the case.
