The potential windfall for investors in the artificial intelligence space is staggering, with some early backers holding stakes valued at nearly $10 billion before the company even goes public. Anthropic is expected to list on the stock market this year at a valuation that could reach as high as $2 trillion. Even at its most recent private market valuation of $965 billion, the shares held by various venture capital firms and individual investors already represent billions of dollars in wealth.
These figures highlight the rapid appreciation of assets in the AI sector over the past few years. The company has seen its valuation climb from a few hundred million dollars to nearly a trillion, creating massive returns for those who entered early. According to data reported by Bloomberg, the current private market price serves as a baseline for understanding the scale of these gains. The upcoming IPO could further multiply these values, particularly for late-stage investors who have made significant recent contributions.
One of the most notable individual investors is Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google. He participated in the company's Series A round in 2021 when the startup was valued at $461 million. PitchBook data indicates that Schmidt currently owns approximately 1% of the company. At the latest private valuation, this modest percentage stake is worth nearly $10 billion. His position illustrates how early access to high-growth technology firms can lead to extraordinary financial outcomes over a relatively short period.
Institutional investors have also made substantial moves. Iconiq, an investment firm, wrote a check for $6 billion to Anthropic last year. At that time, the company was already valued at $183 billion. This late-stage investment is currently valued at $17 billion. Analysts suggest that this position has the potential to double in value once the company completes its initial public offering. The sheer size of the check underscores the confidence large capital players have in the AI lab's long-term trajectory.
Other major venture capital firms have deep ties to the company as well. Menlo Ventures led the Series D funding round and has invested more than $1 billion in Anthropic over time. That cumulative investment is now worth approximately $14 billion. Similarly, Sequoia, a well-known name in venture capital, backed the AI lab earlier this year. At that point, the company was valued at $380 billion. Sequoia's $3 billion investment secured about 1% ownership, meaning the firm has already more than doubled its initial investment.
Smaller or newer firms have also seen significant growth in their positions. Sound Ventures, which was launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round. The firm subsequently added another $400 million to its investment in Anthropic. This combined stake is now worth billions of dollars. It is worth noting that Kutcher left Sound Ventures earlier this year to launch his own venture capital firm, though his initial investment remains part of the firm's history with the AI lab.
Perhaps the most dramatic multiplier effect is seen in the position held by Spark Capital. This firm is the only venture capital group known to hold a board seat at Anthropic. Spark invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round when the company was valued at just $5 billion. That initial position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold. The stake is now valued at $7 billion, representing one of the highest returns on investment among the known backers of the company.
As the company moves toward a public listing, the stakes for all parties involved are rising. The transition from private to public markets will likely solidify these valuations and provide liquidity for investors who have waited years for an exit. For the tech industry as a whole, the success of this IPO will serve as a major indicator of investor appetite for AI-driven enterprises in the coming years.
