Apple’s first foldable smartphone is out, but buyers must pay extra for hardware that enables its primary features.
The iPhone Duo supports the Apple Pencil, a capability new to the iPhone line. Users can write and sketch on both the outer and inner screens. Apple stated the design mimics the proportions of a standard A-series paper notebook. The feature activates with the iOS 27.2 update arriving next week. Only the Apple Pencil with a USB-C connector is compatible. The device costs $69, marked down from its original $79 price.
Fast charging is another feature that requires separate hardware. The phone reaches 50 percent charge in about 20 minutes, but only with a specific power adapter. The box includes a USB-C cable but no charger, matching recent iPhone models. While many users likely own 20W adapters, tech site 9to5Mac recommended Apple’s 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max. That unit is priced at $34, down from $39. The site also suggested Anker’s 100W USB-C charger with a five-foot cable at $29.
Additional recommended gear includes ESR’s MagSafe Car Mount, which holds the phone magnetically on an air vent. It is listed at $19, reduced from $29. The writer noted that pairing the phone with CarPlay allows maps to display on the car’s screen while the phone shows step-by-step directions. They expect this setup to perform better on the Duo’s larger display.
Case options range from $29 for the SPIDERCASE Magnetic Case with a built-in stand to $129 for Apple’s iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand. The Spigen Ultra Hybrid Pro clear case costs $39. Apple’s basic case is priced at $79.
The Duo’s StandBy mode now works when the device is upright without charging. Two views, Home Camera and Home Modular, provide access to smart home accessories. Home Camera allows users to check security cameras at a glance. 9to5Mac recommended the Aqara G100 2K camera at $39 and a eufy 4K camera at $69. AirPods Pro 3 are also on sale at Amazon for $199, down from $249.
Apple did not include the stylus or fast charger in the box, leaving those costs to the consumer.
