Manchester United fans booed the entire starting lineup at Old Trafford on Sunday following a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth. The result extends the club’s worst start to a Premier League season in 40 years. Supporters also cheered off manager Michael Carrick, a move that signals a break from historical loyalty to the managerial post.
The season began with high expectations after the summer arrival of Benjamin Sesko, a 23-year-old Serbian striker signed for a large fee. Injuries, however, kept Sesko sidelined for key matches. United have relied on wide players Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to fill the central role. Mbeumo currently leads the club with four goals. Eight other players in the league have scored more than Mbeumo this season.
Tensions between the dressing room and the board escalated after a Champions League defeat in Como on Wednesday. Captain Bruno Fernandes criticized Carrick’s tactical approach for failing to press the opponent. Fernandes was not on the field for Sunday’s match, yet he received the loudest boos from the crowd. His public criticism appears to have cost him the fans' patience.
The ownership structure remains a point of contention. The Glazer family has held a stake since 2005. Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS Group invested heavily two years ago, bringing in CEO Omar Berrada and technical director Jason Wilcox. Fans and players have questioned the recruitment strategy. Defender Lisandro Martinez publicly criticized Wilcox after the defeat in Madrid, citing a lack of summer investment.
Recruitment gaps continue to plague the squad. The club failed to sign a left-back during the transfer window despite interest in Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall. This lack of depth contributed to Martinez’s recent outburst. The board had previously considered selling Fernandes to the Saudi Pro League or Galatasaray. The 32-year-old expressed disappointment at the openness of those talks.
Former manager Ralf Rangnick recently described the club as needing open-heart surgery. Gary Neville, a former United defender, alleged on Sky Sports on Sunday that specific members of the squad lack professionalism. Neville stated that a few players are not that professional. The club faces a decision on whether to retain Carrick or seek a new manager to implement a distinct identity.
The next test comes in a few days as the league schedule resumes. The board must decide if the current technical setup survives the season. Fans are demanding changes from the top of the hierarchy to the pitch, with no clear timeline for structural shifts.
