Approximately 20 target and preservation letters have been issued to date in the Justice Department's ongoing criminal investigation into Alaska's election procedures. Marc Elias, a Democratic attorney, is among the individuals identified as a target in this probe.
The investigation is led by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Alaska, with support from prosecutors in the Civil Rights Division's criminal section. Federal officials are examining whether Democrats sought to confuse voters by recruiting an individual to pose as Republican incumbent Senator Dan Sullivan.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has separately received a grand jury subpoena in connection with the matter. A law enforcement source confirmed the subpoena, while CBS News reached out to the DSCC for comment.
Elias stated that receiving a target letter on Election Day was expected given his firm's role in opposing the current administration. He noted that the Justice Department has used its power against political enemies without evidence of wrongdoing. His law firm, Elias Law Group, represents Democratic campaigns and progressive groups.
In a statement, Elias declared that his team would not be intimidated by what he described as a sham investigation. He said his attorneys would work around the clock to support their clients and help ensure the president's party faces a defeat at the ballot box.
President Trump has recently posted on social media denouncing Elias and calling for his prosecution. Federal prosecutors have not yet articulated the specific crimes they are investigating.
