Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent took a lunch break at a Cheesecake Factory location near the White House on Friday. He ordered a French Dip Cheeseburger and told reporters present that he had a great meal. Bessent added that he would recommend the restaurant to the Martha's Vineyard social set.
The visit followed a campaign event in Ohio where former President Barack Obama criticized President Donald Trump. Obama compared the White House interior to a Cheesecake Factory, claiming that Trump’s preference for gold decor made the residence look like a venue opened by Saddam Hussein. The comment injected the restaurant chain into the national political conversation.
The timing of the debate coincides with plans to construct a new White House ballroom. The project is estimated to cost more than $600 million. The new space is intended to host state dinners and other official gatherings. Critics and supporters alike are questioning the allocation of funds for such a specific architectural addition.
State dinners typically feature curated menus designed to reflect the culture of the visiting dignitary. In the spring, King Charles III of the United Kingdom ate Dover Sole Meunière during a state dinner at the White House. The dish was served with potato pavé, spring ramps, snow peas, and parsley oil. The meal represented a high level of culinary formality.
In 2018, French President Emmanuel Macron attended a state dinner that began with a goat cheese gateau. The dish was selected to align with French culinary traditions. These meals are often rigid in their presentation, offering guests limited choices. Servers typically present specific courses, such as yellow squash velouté or fava bean fricassée, during the event.
Cheesecake Factory locations currently offer more than 250 items on their standard menus. The selection includes dishes such as Chicken and Waffle Skewers, Tex-Mex Eggrolls, and Pickle Fries. The menu also features Buffalo Blasts, which consist of chicken, cheese, and hot sauce stuffed into a spicy wrapper. The item is deep-fried and served with celery sticks and blue cheese dressing.
The restaurant’s menu provides a wide range of options for diners, including Asian Chicken Nachos with wonton chips and peanut sauce. It also includes Fried Macaroni and Cheese balls. The variety of food available at the chain contrasts with the structured menus served to foreign heads of state at official White House events.
