High school basketball in the Central Valley has long been defined by a specific standard of excellence, a reputation now following one of its standout graduates into the college ranks. Ryleigh Schoonover is starting her freshman year at Fresno State, bringing the habits forged during her time at Clovis West directly into the Bulldogs program.

The decision to stay local was deliberate. Schoonover chose to remain in the area rather than travel farther for her collegiate career, finding deep personal significance in the choice. She noted that wearing the valley 'V' on her chest is a distinct experience that outsiders often fail to grasp. This connection to her roots allowed her to transition smoothly into a new environment while maintaining the identity she built in high school.

Fresno State head coach Ryan McCarthy has expressed strong confidence in his new recruit. He described Schoonover as the best player in the region for her class of 2026 and stated that she proved that assessment immediately upon joining the team. Her background in a winning program has set a high baseline for what is expected of her on the court. McCarthy emphasized that her experience in a program that consistently wins has prepared her for the rigorous demands of college basketball.

Schoonover’s preparation was heavily influenced by her high school mentor, Coach Craig Campbell. The Clovis West program has won consecutive Central Section championships for 14 years, creating an environment where success is the norm rather than the exception. Campbell explained that the goal has always been to remain competitive every season, even if the title is not always secured. He described the culture as one where the team is always knocking on the door of championship contention. Schoonover credited this environment with teaching her that excellence is the standard at every level of play.

The Fresno State team is now focused on competing for a Pac-12 championship, and Schoonover is part of a talented freshman class aiming to contribute to that goal. Her college debut is imminent, with the season opener against UC Merced scheduled in less than two weeks. She will make her first appearance in front of the home crowd at the Save Mart Center, marking a significant milestone in her athletic development.

Looking ahead, Campbell believes that Schoonover is still in the early stages of her potential. He suggested that the Fresno State staff is excited because she is only beginning to unlock her full abilities. This perspective highlights the long-term view of her career, suggesting that her most impactful contributions may still be ahead of her as she settles into her new role.

The move represents a continuation of a local basketball tradition where top talent remains within the community. By joining Fresno State, Schoonover bridges the gap between high school dominance and collegiate competition. Her story reflects the broader trend of local athletes choosing to stay close to home, leveraging their established support systems while taking on new challenges in a higher level of play.
