Jennifer Lawrence has officially returned to the Hunger Games franchise for the upcoming prequel, In Sunrise on the Reaping. The film is scheduled to open in theaters on Nov. 20, ending months of speculation regarding the cast's involvement. Lawrence confirmed she plays Katniss Everdeen in the new installment.
During an interview with Alex Cooper, host of the Call Her Daddy podcast, Lawrence addressed the long-standing rumors about her participation. She described the experience of returning to the set as "unbelievable." The actress noted that the production environment felt familiar because many of the original crew members were still working on the project. "It was the same crew. It was the same camera guys, the same AD, who I've worked with a million times," she said.
Lawrence also confirmed that former co-stars Josh Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson are part of the cast. She said the reunion with both actors was emotionally impactful. "It was so emotional," Lawrence stated, adding that she and Hutcherson frequently kept their arms around each other on set. She characterized the dynamic between them as "so beautiful."
The actress also recounted a humorous anecdote involving Harrelson. According to Lawrence, Harrelson maintained his tradition of making unusual entrances during filming. He reportedly entered her hotel room through the window without being invited. "It wouldn't be the same if he listened to boundaries and used a door," Lawrence joked during the conversation.
Lawrence also revisited a memorable incident from the original franchise. In 2013, she gave herself a pixie cut as a form of protest after producers initially declined to provide a wig for the Mockingjay films. She had grown frustrated with the process of dyeing her hair brown for the role. Lawrence later described the resulting hairstyle as "the worst haircut anyone has ever seen in their life," noting that the look eventually became iconic.
In Sunrise on the Requel is set 24 years before the events of the original film. The story follows 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy, played by Joseph Zada, as he competes in the 50th Hunger Games. This specific event, known as the Second Quarter Quell, requires twice the usual number of tributes to fight to the death. Ralph Fiennes appears in the film as President Snow. Legacy characters from the previous installments are expected to appear through flashforwards or a framing device.
The film is set to begin theatrical distribution on Nov. 20. Lawrence's return marks her first appearance in the franchise since the conclusion of the original four-film saga. The prequel expands the timeline of the series while bringing back familiar faces in supporting roles.
