Elena Rybakina secured her place in the Ningbo Open final by defeating Diana Shnaider 6-3, 7-5 in the semifinal match. The result positions the world number one to defend her title in consecutive years. It also serves as a final tune-up before the WTA Finals next month.
Rybakina, a 27-year-old three-time Grand Slam winner, faced a challenging run-up to this tournament. She sustained a foot injury that forced her withdrawal from the Wuhan event. A heavy loss in Beijing preceded that injury, making this semifinal victory a key statement for her rivals.
The match against the 13th-ranked Shnaider highlighted Rybakina's ability to recover from early struggles. She controlled the first set with aggressive play from the back of the court. Despite a dip in form that required her to use her 11th set point, she closed out the opening frame decisively.
The second set mirrored the first in its volatility. Rybakina struggled with first-serve accuracy but broke serve to lead 4-3. Shnaider responded by breaking her opponent to love in the 10th game. Rybakina countered with powerful returns to retake the lead in the following game and then served with confidence to finish the match.
Rybakina noted that Shnaider’s left-handed style created specific tactical difficulties. “She played really well, and it's always difficult to play against left-handers,” Rybakina said. “During the rallies, to switch the pattern was a little bit of an issue for me, but I'm happy I managed to win in two sets.”
Her opponent in Sunday’s final will be unseeded Canadian Leylah Fernandez. Fernandez advanced by defeating Czech player Marie Bouzkova 6-3, 7-5 at the Yinzhou International Tennis Centre. Fernandez is also left-handed, presenting a similar technical challenge for Rybakina in the championship match.
Following the Ningbo final, Rybakina will travel to Tokyo for the Pan Pacific Open. She will then begin her defense of the WTA Finals title at Indian Wells starting November 8. “It's never easy,” Rybakina said regarding the prospect of back-to-back wins. “I'm going to fight and give my all tomorrow.”
