Apple’s all-in-one desktop lineup received a hardware update on October 27, 2026. The company introduced the new iMac equipped with M6 chips, a processor first deployed in the Mac Mini in August. This release precedes the company’s upcoming “Pro and Tell” event scheduled for Wednesday.

The M6 chip represents Apple’s transition to a 2-nanometer manufacturing process. It features a dual 16-core Neural Engine designed to accelerate on-device artificial intelligence tasks. Apple’s press release states that the M6-powered iMac delivers up to five times faster on-device AI performance compared to the previous M4 model. The new hardware skips the M5 series entirely, marking the first iMac update since the M4 overhaul two years ago.

Pricing for the M6 iMac starts at $1,499. This base configuration includes a 10-core CPU and a 10-core GPU. The price point matches the entry-level cost of the 8-core CPU M4 iMac. A higher-tier option with a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU begins at $1,699. Preorders open at 1:10 p.m. Eastern Time on October 28, with general availability arriving on November 6.

Hardware changes beyond the central processor are limited. The base model now includes Apple’s N1 wireless networking chip, supporting Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. Previously, these connectivity standards were reserved for higher-spec variants. The port configuration remains consistent with the M4 model, offering two Thunderbolt ports on the 10-core version and four on the 12-core version.

New configuration fees alter the cost of certain accessories. Upgrading from a Magic Mouse to a Magic Trackpad now costs an additional $50, whereas the switch was complimentary on the previous generation. A 2.5 gigabit Ethernet port is available for a $30 premium over the Wi-Fi-only setup. The upgrade is a step up from the 1 gigabit connection found in older models.

Apple has also adjusted keyboard options. The company will not offer a Magic Keyboard with Touch ID but without a numeric keypad, despite featuring an image of that specific configuration on the announcement page. The color palette remains unchanged from the M4 lineup, with Apple reusing previous marketing imagery to display the new hardware.

The M6 iMac represents a focused performance upgrade rather than a comprehensive redesign. The shift to 2-nanometer technology and the enhanced Neural Engine provide the core technical improvements, while physical design and color options stay consistent with the current generation.
