Mbappe's 22 World Cup Goals Fuel Ballon d'Or Bid Amid Trophy Drought
The Real Madrid forward holds the all-time World Cup scoring record but faces a steep historical hurdle as every winner in the last ten years won a major trophy.

Kylian Mbappe enters Monday’s Ballon d’Or ceremony in London with a statistical advantage that few players in modern history have possessed, yet he remains outside the favorite status held by his rivals. The 2025-26 season, which the award covers, concluded without a single trophy for the French forward at either the club or international level. His case for the prize relies entirely on individual performance records rather than team success.
The centerpiece of his argument is his performance at the 2026 World Cup in North America. Mbappe won the Golden Boot for the second consecutive tournament, a feat that also made him the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history. He finished with 22 goals in 22 matches, moving past Lionel Messi, who has 21, and Miroslav Klose, who has 16. Mbappe noted last month that overtaking historical legends in the sport’s most important tournament is a standout achievement. When asked who he was voting for, he simply answered: "Myself."
His club numbers reinforce that individual dominance. At Real Madrid, Mbappe scored 25 goals to become La Liga’s top scorer. He also netted 15 goals in the Champions League, where he again led the scoring charts. "I was top scorer in all the biggest competitions, and I think that this could be a good year for me, and I really feel it," the former PSG forward stated. His manager, Jose Mourinho, supported the view that individual brilliance matters. "We know who has made history this summer, and he's not from PSG or the Spanish national team," Mourinho said.
The main weakness in his campaign is the absence of silverware. Real Madrid experienced a turbulent season under managers Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa. The team finished second in La Liga and lost to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals, marking a second straight season without a major trophy. On the international stage, France placed fourth at the World Cup, losing to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place playoff.
His primary rivals secured more hardware. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and the La Liga title with Barcelona. Harry Kane of Bayern Munich collected three trophies during the term, including the Bundesliga championship. Mbappe appears unconcerned by this gap, telling radio station RFI that the award announces a player, not a team. He believes the ability to produce eye-catching individual moments is what stands out for this specific honor.
Historical precedent is against him. Every Ballon d’Or winner over the past decade lifted at least one trophy in the award year. Ousmane Dembele won the 2025 prize after helping PSG secure their first Champions League title. Rodri won the award two years prior after winning Euro 2024 with Spain and the Premier League with Manchester City. The last winner without a major trophy was Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013.
Ronaldo won his second Ballon d’Or that year, ending Lionel Messi’s four-year winning streak. He scored 66 goals for club and country, even though Portugal failed to advance past the 2012 World Cup playoffs and Real Madrid were league runners-up. That precedent suggests Mbappe still has a slim chance to win, particularly after nine previous nominations and a third-place finish in 2023.
